Display - AUO Debuts Double-Sided AMOLED
October 13, 2004
AUO has released samples of double-sided active matrix OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panels. The panel reaches resolutions of 143 pixels per square inch for both motion and still images, and has brightness of 200 nits. One side of the panel is 2.0", while the other is 1.5", and the brightness of each side can be independently adjusted. At 1.8mm thick, the panel is far lighter than two TFT LCD panels, making clamshell phones the likely application.

AUO has also implemented a special desiccant to address OLED's innate sensitivity to moisture. The company is currently applying for a patent for the technology.

However, given yield rate issues, mass production schedules continue to be pushed back. At the same time, AUO has not yet licensed the technology from Kodak. The company states they are currently in talks with Kodak to obtain licensure.
